A story never meant to be written down
I read the first entry of this series, “A Conspiracy of Truths”, in the fall, and generally really liked it. I’m a sucker for stories about storytelling, and this one had a grumpy old man as a protagonist, a fascinating setting, and
The sequel though. The sequel had me weeping.
After the events of “A Conspiracy of Truths”, we are privy to the raw, messy narrative of a former supporting player thrust into responsibility too quickly. Rowland utilizes footnotes in the best way I’ve seen since “Dr. Strange and Mr. Norrell”, creating a call-and-response between the prime storyteller and the book’s deuteragonist full of history, tension, and dare I say, love. “A Choir of Lies” is meant for every blocked artist, a testament to the power of narrative…even if it’s only just for yourself.
Recent Gigs
Since my last newsletter I’ve provided additional voices to the following shows:
Goblin Slayer: Season 2, Episodes 7 - 10
A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special, Episode 9
And also - some bits!
I was this snacking lady on the left in The Kingdoms of Ruin Episode 10…
….This brunette bath attendant in Goblin Slayer Episode 210…
…and my favorite, this sullen girl in the Red Dragon squad in A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special, Episodes 7 & 8
I love this chick. I vividly remember attempting to get this hairstyle to work for me in high school because I wanted to BE this chick. She’s from the noble class so she has to put on airs of being too good for the classes she’s taking, but like, really cares about doing well? I think she has a crush on the dude in her squad who’s always talking about how great their team leader is. Probably won’t work out, but only because she’s too proud to be vulnerable. Especially in front of a guy who’s so enthusiastic about everything - what if she’s the exception?
Anyway…
As you can see I was truly spoiled in the month of December. A huge thanks to Jeremy Inman, Caitlin Glass, and Lee George for thinking of me, and I can’t wait for the new year!
Performance of the Week
I usually focus on English-language actors in this segment, but I have to give Enoki Junya his flowers for his work in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.
Enoki’s gotten some publicity recently since a clip of him recording a pivotal scene literally on the ground shaking began circulating on TikTok. Whether an actor should put themselves through an ordeal like that in the service of their art is another discussion entirely, but you can’t argue with the results — Yuji Itadori, a normally happy-go-lucky fixture in a strange, often gross world goes through the wringer in JJK’s Shibuya Incident arc, and hearing him break after an overwhelming, sakuga-infused sequence wraps up is like hearing a puppy get stepped on. I felt legitimately bad for enjoying the show up until that point.
